چکیده

Many empirical size distributions in economics and elsewhere exhibit power-law behaviour in the upper tail. This article contains a simple explanation for this. It also predicts lower-tail powerlaw behaviour, which is verified empirically for income and city-size data.

Strong, Weak and False Inverse Power Laws

Pareto, Zipf and numerous subsequent investigators of inverse power distributions have often represented their findings as though their data conformed to a power law form for all ranges of the variable of interest. I refer to this ideal case as a strong inverse power law (SIPL). However, many of the examples used by Pareto and Zipf, as well as others who have followed them, have been truncated ...

Marshall-Olkin Extended Zipf Distribution

The Zipf distribution also known as scale-free distribution or discrete Pareto distribution, is the particular case of Power Law distribution with support the strictly positive integers. It is a one-parameter distribution with a linear behaviour in the log-log scale. In this paper the Zipfian distribution is generalized by means of the Marshall-Olkin transformation. The new model has more flexi...

Modeling Fractal Structure of City-Size Distributions Using Correlation Functions

Zipf's law is one the most conspicuous empirical facts for cities, however, there is no convincing explanation for the scaling relation between rank and size and its scaling exponent. Using the idea from general fractals and scaling, I propose a dual competition hypothesis of city development to explain the value intervals and the special value, 1, of the power exponent. Zipf's law and Pareto's...

Zipf ’ S Law in Literature

We present in this paper a numerical investigation of literary texts by various well-known English writers, covering the first half of the twentieth century, based upon the results obtained through corpus analysis of the texts. A fractal power law is obtained for the lexical wealth defined as the ratio between the number of different words and the total number of words of a given text. By consi...

On a General Theorem of Number Theory Leading to the Gibbs, Bose–Einstein, and Pareto Distributions as well as to the Zipf–Mandelbrot Law for the Stock Market

The notion of density of a finite set is introduced. We prove a general theorem of set theory which refines the Gibbs, Bose–Einstein, and Pareto distributions as well as the Zipf law.
